Story One of the most groundbreaking productions ever to hit Broadway, Fun Home is the winner of ve 2015 Tony® Awards including Best Musical. Based on Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir, Fun Home features music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and direction by Sam Gold, whose work on this production earned them Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book and Best Direction. Fun Home introduces us to Alison at three different ages, revealing memories of her uniquely dysfunctional family—her mother, brothers and volatile, brilliant, enigmatic father—that connect with her in surprising new ways. A refreshingly honest musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes, Newsday says Fun Home is “a blazingly original heartbreaker and a nonstop treasure of invention.”
What is it like? This inventive and bold show is told by the protagonist Alison (who is the writer of the graphic novel). Following the death of her father, she recounts the story of his unique life and personality, including the family secrets he concealed. The story flips between her past (when she was a little girl playing at her family’s funeral home) to the present (when she deals with her own sexuality and truths she would rather not face about her father). This is the first mainstream musical whose story focuses on a young lesbian, a groundbreaking piece of work that was a nalist for the Pulitzer Prize along with its Tony Award wins.
Is it good for kids? Due to adult subject matter, the show is best for mature audiences.
