Martha Gonzalez
ASU GAMMAGE GUEST RESIDENCY ARTIST

The ASU Gammage Residency is a program that supports an exceptional performing artist for an extended period of time to engage in campus and community settings, create new work, teach, perform and essentially become a member of the ASU and Phoenix Metro communities. Martha Gonzalez is a Grammy Award™ winning singer, songwriter, artivista, PhD, feminist music theorist and Assistant Professor in the Intercollegiate Department of Chicana/o Latina/o Studies at Scripps/Claremont College. She has performed at the Kennedy Center for the Arts and the Smithsonian and worked with musical artists Jackson Browne, Los Lobos, Tom Waits, Susanna Baca and many more. A Fulbright (2007-2008), Ford (2012-2013) and Woodrow Wilson Fellow (2016-2017) her academic interest in music has been fueled by her own musicianship as a singer/songwriter and percussionist for Grammy Award winning band Quetzal. The relevance of Martha and Quetzal’s music and lyrics have been noted in a range of publications, from dissertations to scholarly books. In addition, Gonzalez along with her partner Quetzal Flores has been instrumental in catalyzing the transnational dialogue between Chican@s/Latin@ communities in the U.S and Jarocho communities in Veracruz, Mexico. Martha and Quetzal have made a considerable impact in the Los Angeles Chicano music scene and around the country. Gonzalez is also working on her first book manuscript titled, Chican@ Artivistas: East Los Angeles Trenches Transborder Tacticis. Through her music and community workshops in multiple Los Angeles communities, she is also a community organizer/leader who’s many efforts have included successfully helping to create increased access to healthcare and educational programs for underserved populations. For her amazing combination of artistry, scholarship and community engagement/activism Martha Gonzalez is the perfect artist partner for ASU Gammage in helping to realize our mission of Connecting Communities™. Throughout the 2016-17 academic year, Martha will teach, perform, mentor and connect communities on and off ASU campuses.
